H.E.L.P. Programme Gives Back to Hospital

December 12, 2016

THE QUEEN ELIZABETH HOSPITAL (QEH) will be in a better position to welcome visitors to its Chapel thanks to the generosity of The BHL Group.

The beverage conglomerate presented Barbados’ primary acute health care facility with a cheque of ten thousand dollars towards the refurbishment of its chapel on Monday December 12th.

On hand to receive the donation was CEO of the Hospital, Dr. Dexter James. He was joined by Hospital Chaplain Canon Noel Burke. In making the presentation, BHL’s Corporate Affairs Manager Sophia Cambridge noted that the donation falls under the People pillar of the Group’s corporate social responsibility programme H.E.L.P – an acronym for Heritage, Environment, Learning and People.

“We engaged Canon Noel Burke and asked what was needed. It is our hope that the Chapel will be a place of quiet solitude for those who use the hospital. Not only will we commit to the refurbishment of the Chapel but will also ensure that the hospital has adequate signage to the Chapel so that individuals may have clear direction as to its location,” she said.

Canon Noel Burke said the donation was a welcome one and informed those present that when the Chapel was first constructed in 1975, it was furnished through the assistance of the hospital’s nurses.

“Spiritual care continues to play a major role in recuperation,” he said. “The 41 year old chapel does not only serve relatives of patients but from time to time, various groups make use of it.”

The hospital’s CEO, Dr. Dexter James used the opportunity to point out that since the hospital’s philanthropic drive three years ago, the institution had been able to raise 10.3 million dollars. This, he said, showed that the private sector supported the hospital in its efforts.

“We are on the right track. We don’t always get it right but for the most part our focus and vision for developing hospital services have been well accepted by corporate Barbados.”

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital joins ten other recipients under BHL’s H.E.L.P. Programme. The H.E.L.P. Programme was developed in 2014. The BHL Group comprises the subsidiaries of Banks (Barbados) Breweries Ltd., PINEHILL, Banks Distribution Ltd. and the Barbados Bottling Co. Ltd. The BHL Group is a subsidiary of AB InBev.
