Milk-A-Thon efforts continue

Tuesday, June 9th, 2015

BARBADIANS have been heeding the call of the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) to assist in supplementing the nutrition of less fortunate children, with milk.

Milk-A-Thon 2015, an initiative of the YWCA, endorsed by Pine Hill Dairy and packaging producers, Tetra Pak, is a milk collection drive aimed at encouraging individuals to support the cause by donating specially packaged PINEHILL Whole Milk or 2% Reduced Fat Milk.

President of the YWCA, Tamara Brathwaite said “some of the children we encounter with our Breakfast Club and Reading Club programs, are lacking basic nutritional needs that help them to progress according to their ages – their growth is stunted on many levels and so a simple donation of milk will go a long way for them.”

In thanking Barbadians for their generosity, she also singled out the staff at the Oistins branch of Massy Stores Super Centre who, even after the collection period had ended at their location, mobilized their staff and amassed an additional ten cases of milk for the YWCA.

Thus far, approximately 2100 cartons of milk have been donated by the public during collection drives held on Saturday, May 30th and Saturday June 6th. Pine Hill Dairy kick started the donations with 600 cartons of milk and Tetra Pak is set to donate an additional 3000 cartons of milk to the initiative which will also benefit Variety, The Children’s Charity and Soroptimist International.

The final milk collection drive is scheduled for this Saturday, June 13th at the following retailers: Savings Plus, Harbour Road, Savings Plus, Rock Dundo, Trimart Supermarket Rendezvous, Popular Supermarket, Spooners Hill, Cost U Less and Trimart, Mile and a Quarter. Volunteers from each of the charitable institutions will be on hand to receive the donations.

Individuals can continue to donate throughout the month of June at either Beverage Express, Pine Hill Dairy or Banks’ Wholesale Depot in Newton.
Barbados is the second English-speaking Caribbean country to implement the Milk-A-Thon.
